We’ve always made a point throughout our homeschooling years to research the meaning of holidays so as to celebrate accordingly. Admittedly, it’s often difficult to find the authentic meaning of a holiday amidst all the folklore, but I’ll leave that task up to you.
In a nutshell, we believe that Valentine’s Day originated from a story about a certain St. Valentine that was martyred in Rome for refusing to deny his faith approximately 270 AD. Shortly before his death on February 14th, he was able to send letters to his brothers in the faith telling them how much he loved them all in the Lord. Therefore, occasionally we would make valentines telling this story and subsequently telling everyone how much we love them.
