As a theologian, pastor, and law enforcement offi cer I have had the unique opportunity to see the
fruit of modern Christianity. What many parents are doing today is not something that deserves
any encomium. Instead it deserves a funeral dirge for the spiritual death of their children.
Alan Melton has written this with a passionate heart that has an absolute conviction that Scripture is
the answer to solve many of the ailing and failing homes that are producing children who neither love
God nor man! As he has shown through mathematical numbers, the children who are being lost due to
the world is staggering and stunning.
Alan has made it clear, almost as if issuing a clarion call from heaven, that each parent must take
responsibility for the spiritual growth of their children lest those children become “spiritual orphans.”
It is these spiritual orphans that weigh heavy on every area of society. As a theologian it is these
orphans who are so biblically illiterate that they cannot and do not understand the basics of the gospel
because the parents have failed to train them in the word which is Christ in written form.
As a pastor it is these orphans who are rebellious, stubborn, and full of enough sin and spiritual stains
that they oft en erode not only their life but the lives of others around them.
As a law enforcement offi cer it is these orphans who are led to the jails and justice system whereby they
are disciplined for sins that could have been more eff ectively handled by their parents’ biblical counsel
while the child was in the home.
What is the answer to these spiritual orphans? Th e answer rests with following these basic patterns that
Alan has set forth in this work. Millions of Christians each week obey various patterns that are taught
from the Bible. People obey the pattern to attend church, people obey the pattern to give off erings,
people obey the pattern to have the Bible taught, people obey the pattern to be immersed in baptism,
and people obey the pattern of participating in the Lord’s Supper. Jesus provided a pattern for how to
disciple.
